Greek Corner: Caring for Greek Letter Shirts

Caring for your Greek letter shirts doesn't have to be hard and you don't have to gamble on whether or not your washing and drying methods could harm your lettered apparel. We've put together some helpful tips and tricks for keeping your letters looking and feeling great.

Washing

When it comes to washing your sewn or pressed-on Greek letter shirt you should be cautious. Why? Some specialty fabrics(typically satins and fur) cannot be exposed to high temperature water or rough washing cycles. What should you do then? When you wash your Greek letter shirts it is always a good idea to wash your shirt with like colors and on a delicate cycle, never a cotton or permanent-press cycle. Too hard of an agitation or too hard a spin cycle can cause premature thread damage, this can cause peeling or stretched letters, and nobody wants a torn, sloppy letter shirt.

What to remember:

  • Wash on a delicate cycle with as close to like colors as possible.
  • Wash inside-out!
  • Cold water, never hot!
  • Remove promptly when done washing

Drying

Drying your letter shirts is easier than you'd think. When drying your shirts use a medium or low heat setting, this may result in a longer drying time but your heat-applied letters will thank you by sticking around longer, so to speak.

What to remember:

  • Low to Medium heat setting
  • Dry Inside-Out
  • Remove promptly from the dryer to avoid wrinkles and creases

Can You Iron Your Greek Letters? Yes, but be careful

Ironing your Greek letters can provide a polished and fresh look, but you need to exercise caution. When you iron your letters you should always use a low to medium heat setting and keep the iron moving! Never use a high or cotton setting, this will damage your letters.

What to remember:

  • Low to Medium heat setting
  • Keep the iron moving
  • Do not use too much pressure!

My letters are peeling, are they ruined?

When your letters start to peel your heart sinks, you start to remember all of the great times you have had wearing that shirt, you want to cry, but don't panic just yet! Over the years we have had a few shirts brought in to us whether we made the letters or not and the letters were peeling up.

The first thing we will do is see how your shirt was constructed, if it was pressed on with a heat press we can fix the shirt in seconds! If the letters were sewn we can fix it sometimes within a minute or less! Your letters usually are never runined, a little peeling or thread loss over the months or even years happens. With that in mind you should follow our washing instructions to keep any and all letter peelings and thread loss to a minimum.
